Review
Excellent, like all the DBM(M) and DBR books and supplements. A really high level and standard of historical research by WRG and Phil Barker, giving insights into the composition of the armies of the era and all the details you need for designing realistic armies. The time period covered though is too late for the popular English Civil War lists. The separate DBR Army Books have now been superseded by a new edition of DBR (2.0, with a nice 2015 reprint) covering the whole timescale of the rules and system. I do like DBR; my only criticism is the rules and army books don't handle well, in game terms, the alternating pike and shot infantry formations. The approach, with distinct bases of pike and shot *tesalating* and moving in blocks, doesn't reflect well the fact that wholly integrated units of pike and shot would - of course - move in battles with no separation of the two troop types. In particular as the years of the Renaissance period went by and commanders adapated battlefield tactics. The rules deal with this awkwardly. The DBX system deals with Ancients battles best. Overall, however, DBR is my favourite set of rules for Renaissance figure gaming and all three of the Lists books are super. Clear, incisive writing with lots of interesting historical points and has both a Contents and Index page for looking up the armies.
